The sides should be tapered and the front an back curved properly then it would fit we chubbas. No elastic casing unless you use a stretch facing. I didn't look at the directions but I do these all the time. Folding over is way too bulky.

Could you expand on that a little? I just bought a couple of sweaters at a church thrift store and I'd like to make skirts out of them. To put it delicately, I'm a little/lot on the chunky side, so I'd like to avoid extra bulk.

not too many people could wear this and look good--the waist is too bulky
