Iron-on on vinyl is still pretty popular in the t-shirt making business so it's not going anywhere anytime soon but just incase you were thinking that you couldn't use it for anything else, Gerry something different, colourful and fun. This pillow is super easy and fun to make plus it has pom poms.

Love this whimsical elephant pillow design. The tutorial calls for a heat-transfer vinyl to make the cute water droplets however I imagine fusible web interfacing to fuse onto fabric for the water droplets might be an acceptable way to adapt the pattern. Either way this sewing project would make a great gift for kids.
