I found some Egypt sand, aka emery sand [also has other names] on eBay. a cup weighs a pound. easy to work with just suggest using at least 2 thicknesses of fabric as over time the holes will allow leakage of the sand. but it works really well.

These are so easy and cute! I've made several, I put silica sand in the bottom half first than top it off with stuffing. The sand is so I can sharpen my needles. I've given several as gifts also.
