A basic list like this one of sewing supplies needed by first time sewers is a great way to get started. Quilting rulers, while great for accuracy, are perhaps an expensive luxury that can be bought later. I would add though a folding cardboard pattern cutting mat is a great portable cutting surface with precise metric and standard measurements.
