Our Mission

Over the course of their lives, 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month approaches, FaveQuilts.com and AllFreeSewing.com are banding together with Fairfield to host the Hands-On-Heart Breast Cancer Pillow Drive, a month-long creative campaign to raise not only awareness but also directly alleviate some of the pain and discomfort of breast cancer sufferers who have undergone a mastectomy.

The Hands-On-Heart Pillow has been specially designed to fit comfortably under the arm of a post-op patient, relieving some of the pressure from that area and protecting it from painful bumps and bruises. These pillows are easy to make, appropriate for all ages and experience levels. They can be made with a sewing machine or stitched by hand.

Are we allowed to make these pillows for our local hospitals for their cancer patients in Cary and Raleigh, NC? Thanks

Hi! I am so glad you would like to make these pillows. If you want to be entered into the contest above, you need to send the pillows to our office so that we can enter you into the giveaway. If not, feel free to make and donate them to our drive or local hospitals. Kaylee, Editor of AllFreeSewing.com

If you are still having trouble getting it to print to size, try this sequence(you still have to piece the pattern together): Select Print Pages to print > 2 (pattern only) Page size & handling > click on the button Poster Tile scale > 200% Check the box for "Cut Marks". Make sure no other boxes are checked. Orientation: Portrait Click the Print button on the bottom of the page.

I simply got a piece of tracing paper and traced it off my monitor! It will be bigger then 12" x 12" though.

My computer is having a problem in download/print out. I was able to save it to my "documents" but it wil not appear for me to print out... Do you have pattern into a PDF file so I am able to print this out???? I would really LOVE to make this pillow!! thanks, Linda

Hi! The pattern linked is actually a pdf. Please ensure that you have the most recent software and try again. If this still does not work, feel free to email the editors at editor@allfreesewing.com and we can try and send you another version of the file. The link above, however, is working on our end. Hope the helps! Kaylee, editor of AllFreeSewing.com

There are some things wrong with your directions. First the pattern is larger than fitting on a 12inch sq. Use the 200% scale pattern but use a larger pc of fabric. When you stuff the heart you will lose length and width from the stuffing rounding it. So the pattern at 200% is probably the right size but don't expect to cut it out of a 12" sq.! I am presenting it to my quilt quild so need to make corrections!!

i also had a prolem getting the pattern to measure 12x12.help please. mine only measures6x9 finished.

On your print screen, select page 2 only (you don't need 1-2), then change tile scale to 200%. You should also click the box that says 'cut marks'. It will print out 6 pages. You cut and tape everything together. Hope this helps.

Just saw this and would love to make some . . . but can't get the pattern to measure 12" x 12". What do I need to do?

I love this. I am 75 and had breast cancer. I will participate on this!

You should post this to your facebook page.

Will the pillows be distributed nation-wide or only in IL? I have a group in CA that would like to contribute locally.

Hi! We are distributing our pillows by donating them with the American Sewing Guild of Chicago who will be distributing them locally for us through the American Cancer Society. If you would like to donate locally, I suggest checking in with your local chapter of the American Sewing Guild, American Cancer Society, or even a local hospital. Hope that helps! Kaylee, Editor of AllFreeSewing.com

Just saw this Saturday Oct. 5. Will sew one and get it in by Oct. 31. Thanks I was looking for something to do to help someone.

Hope I got the scale right. My pattern is 7X3 inches.

when is the deadline for this? I just saw it this week. I am a breast cancer /survivor I hope I can still help with this wonderful project. cathy

It looks like it ends October 31 with a weekly give away each week...I made one pillow and it took 30 minutes..mailing it tomorrow.

i just saw this. why wasn't it shown earlier? do any of the hospitals accept these(edwards, bolingbrook,il good samaritan dg? get a jump on this for next year please?

What is the finish size.

Hello. The pattern does not take that long to make and you just need to have it post-marked by October 31 (meaning you can mail it out on that date and it will be still be entered in the contest). Hope that helps! Kaylee, Editor of AllFreeSewing.com

Just saw this project could we get into it after the deadline for next year?

Hi! This project actually only takes about 30 minutes to make (including all the prep for the project), so you should have time to make it this year. The projects just need to be post-marked by 10/31! Hope that helps! Kaylee, Editor of AllFreeSewing.com
