Drawstring Car Play Mat
From the Blogger: "Do you have a child who loves to play with cars? This tutorial is for a car play mat, which doubles as a drawstring storage bag - perfect for play and tidying!! This project uses fabric scraps, fabric paint, and two large pieces of fabric. The tutorial comes with downloadable templates for zoo animals. This is an involved project, so allow yourself plenty of time to complete! Customize for your child's particular interests, zoo, park, petrol station, hospital, you decide."

Such a great project and, even though it is rated Intermediate, it is quite easy to simplify if that is what you would prefer. I wanted to make mine larger and in a rectangle shape instead of round so that is what I did. Next time Ill sew the shapes on as per the tutorial but, because time was short, I painted on all the detail, the roads, houses, etc, all painted, it took me less than a day to complete the whole thing and my 6 year old nephew loves it.

Wow, my son would have loved this super idea, but he's too,old now! Sewing on the houses and road, etc really gives it a cute look, but you could change it up a bit by making your houses out of scrap fabrics and appliqu them on to the main fabric. Another option, if you are artsy and like to draw and paint, is to create the houses, etc by using fabric paint, or markers, and paint or draw them onto the fabric directly. I did this with a train layout one time, and it looked cute...even have your little one help you with the art and one day, it will be a momento to their childhood .... Great idea. Thanks, for, sharing!
