Up until the late 1800’s, standard sleeping attire in western culture was essentially a long shirt referred to as a nightgown. British colonialists discovered the loose fitting pants worn by people in India, called pyjama, a word of Persian origin which means “leg garment.” As they were known to do, the British brought back this part of Indian culture to England and the loose pants began to be worn as a lounging garment. Eventually, the pajama pant and top took over as sleep wear in favor of nightgowns and soon, the whole ensemble was referred to collectively as pajamas.
Since their introduction into western culture, pajamas have gone through numerous fashion phases. Starting with the traditional button up shirt and loose pants, pajamas soon transitioned to include footed onesies meant to be warmer in winter time with the signature butt flap to easily take care of nighttime business. Women’s pajamas began taking more fashionable and less functional turns with the introduction of the baby doll, a tunic-length top with bloomer-like shorts underneath. The many transitions of the pajamas have led to the wide variety of sleep wear options we have today.

Great tutorial. I love the step by step pictures too. These Pajama bottoms look so comfy and this tutorial makes it so easy. I love that the bottom has a band of a contrast fabric and I love the ribbon on the waistband. This tutorial is a must for a quick pair of PJ's. I am going to make some for sure because I do not like tight fitting ones. What fabric did you use?

Thank you so much! I had been searching for a beginner project that involved something I could wear and pajama bottoms are the perfect project. I just put a twist on them because I didn't have any elastic. I made them with a draw string and made a full pant leg which I hemmed with a contrasting zig-zag stitch. I LOVE THEM! Now on to the top.

My girls love to wear the pj bottoms while in the house and around the yard this pattern should be easy enough I can keep them in them even though some of them are still growing and they want different colors and material. I love this!!! I am so glad I found this site.
