I would use light weight flannel, it would be softer than muslin, and more absorbent for a wash cloth I think.

My daughter has several of these that she bought. They are perfect for swaddling newborns in the warmer months. They were very pricey, so I started looking for printed muslin to make for baby gifts. I found some colored muslin, but can't find printed that is sold in retail stores or online. I bought the colored and can't wait to make them.
