How to Tie a Knot in Thread Before Sewing:
You’ve threaded the needle, now you have to tie a knot. Seems pretty basic, but if you’ve never done it before you might start to second guess yourself here. This is the very basic way to make a sewing knot that will keep your stitches in place for hand sewing projects.
-
The editors at AllFreeSewing suggest that when sewing by hand, sew with a double thread, meaning not just one single piece of thread through the needle, but a double layer.
-
Match the two end pieces so they’re even.
-
Fold an end piece in half so you’re “doubling” your double layers of thread (it will look like four pieces of thread next to each other).
-
Twist these end pieces together to strengthen this piece.
-
Tie a basic knot.
-
Trim excess thread.
How to Tie Off Thread After Sewing:
You’ll need to secure a knot after finishing your sewing project so that your handiwork doesn’t fall out.
-
After you’ve finished your last stitch in whatever hand sewing project you’re working on, push about half of the needle through a very small piece of fabric.
-
Wind the thread around the needle a few times.
-
Holding the wound thread in place, pull the rest of the needle out of the fabric.
-
You will have created a knot.
-
Tighten the knot & trim.
-
That’s it! Now go forth and hand sew with confidence!
